“I write from my heart and my experience. [I’ve] been doing it for such a long time and I want to make sure this is my voice. I’m not Maya Angelou or [Gwendolyn] Brooks. I want my voice to come through. I want them to say ‘this is a different voice’ because there’s so much literature out there. So many wonderful writings, but I want to have my own voice.”
