“I like to work hard at my writing, and if that makes me a good writer, then okay. I’d also ask what makes a good writer? and how do we know? and all of that. But I hold my writing to a standard of whether or not I’ve been published or if people have been published, but saying that I’m a good writer belies the work that goes into my writing. It doesn’t account for all of the work behind that. I think if we were to qualify what makes a good writer, I think a good writer is an effective writer, and an effective writer works very hard and goes through multiple drafts and understands that writing is a social process.”
