“One of the reasons I learned to write well is because I have a lisp. I was always self conscious about it when I was young, so I learned to communicate on paper because it was a good way for me to get my thoughts out there and not be self conscious about my speech impediment. I wanted to communicate and I didn’t want to hear myself.”

Patricia West is the head of the Gateway Library at George Mason University.
