“Sometimes, first thing in the morning, I go through Twitter and follow a lot of writers, reporters and influencers. And I’ll just go through and see what they’re writing about. There’s always so much cool stuff going on all the time [and] it sort of inspires me to be part of a conversation. There are a lot of cool people with a lot of really interesting opinions, and even if they’re not your opinions, it’s interesting to see how other people think. Which (I’ve read this, so this is not advice from me) but in order to be a good writer you have to read. And it’s so true; I went through a period where I just wasn’t reading anything. It wasn’t until I started being more active with reading the news, reading books, watching documentaries, listening to podcasts, that I could tell my writing was starting to get better. Because not only was it in more informed, but I was kind of a sponge, starting to take in other people’s writing.”

Laura Powers is Lead Marketing Coordinator for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
