In order to provide the best possible support for student writers, the University Writing Center also provides resources and consultation services for faculty assigning writing in their courses. For that reason, one of its important roles is to serve as a locus for Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) activities, a place where faculty can come for advice and resources on teaching with writing and responding to student writing. Faculty may also contact writing center tutors to talk about the writing needs of their students. See Referring Students for more information about the referral process.

In-Class and On-Site Writing Center Orientations ("Roadshows")

Faculty may request that a tutor visit their classes to do a ten-minute presentation. To schedule a roadshow, email Terry Zawacki (tzawacki@gmu.edu) and she will forward your request to the roadshow scheduler. Information on how to request a roadshow also appears on E-files for the first several weeks of every semester. Another option is to schedule a time to bring the class to see the writing center facility and peruse the library of handbooks, writing guides, and free handouts (handouts are also available on the Writing Center's website.)

Writing Center Workshops

Every semester the writing center offers a series of workshops on writing from sources. These are announced on the front pageof the Writing Center site and on E-files. For more information, you can call the Writing Center. You may also want to recommend that your students look at the online "workshops" on a variety of topics offered on the Writing Center's site.

In-Class Workshops

With sufficient advanced notice, tutors can come to your classroom to conduct specially-focused writing workshops, designed in consultation with you or based on the workshops that have already been developed.

Peer Tutoring in the Disciplines

Strong writers in any major with good interpersonal communications skills are invited to sign up for CHSS 390: Peer Tutoring in the Disciplines. Students will learn how to tutor writing one-on-one and put these skills into practice. For further information from the GMU Writing Center website, click here.

Individual Consultations on Writing-to-learn Activities, Assignment Design, and Criteria for Evaluation
