Referring a Student and Session Confidentiality
Faculty can refer students to the writing center by writing a note for the student to bring to the Writing Center, describing the kinds of writing assistance the student requires. Ask your student to request a "Visit Verification" form (see below) as proof of the visit. Also tell your student to be sure to check off the box on the intake form indicating that it's okay for the tutor to discuss the session with you should you want more details. If a student has been referred but has not given you a visit verification form, you may wish to call the writing center (703.993.1200) to find out whether the student has had a session(s) with us; however, tutors can discuss session details only if the student has waived confidentiality. If a student says that a tutor may not discuss the session with a teacher, then he/she does not even if the student has been referred.

Visit Verification
Teachers sometimes ask students to bring some kind of proof that they have come to a session at the Writing Center. If a teacher wants proof of attendance, he/she should tell the student to ask for a "Visit Verification" form which lists the date and time of the session, the tutor's name, and describes briefly the focus of the session.
