WAC Programs at Other Institutions

Prior to the establishment of the WAC Clearinghouse and its own list of WAC programs, our site served as a repository for WAC programs with an online presence. Because programs occasionally still contact us to be listed on our site, we have continued that tradition. We've also added brief descriptions of components of these program websites that we think might be particularly useful to WAC professionals and students of WAC.  We welcome you to contact us if you would like your program to be listed.

• Brigham Young University

  • BYU hosts video interviews with writers and teachers on many writing topics, newsletters going back to 1999, and a long list of WAC tips for teachers, including a discussion of learning transfer.
• California State University — Sacramento
  • The website collects excellent Resources for Teachers, advice for
    students in Writing for Specific Disciplines, and all 25 issues of the program’s newsletter
• Columbia College — Writing in the Disciplines
  • In addition to numerous discipline specific guides, the articles “Eleven
    Things Your Could Start Doing Today for the Benefit of Your Students’ Writing, “What is an A Paper?” and the presentation, “Designing Effective Writing Assignments,” seem particularly useful.
• WAC Clearinghouse at Colorado State University
  • As the home of the WAC Clearinghouse, CSU hosts many resources, including but not limited to: WAC-related academic journals, open access to 38 scholarly books, the latest WAC News and Information, and the International WAC Network.
• Cornell University
  • Offers Writing Intensive seminars in the disciplines; no required composition.
• Georgia State University
  • Website maintains a large collection of faculty, and Writing to Learn
    resources - including several on writing in Mathematics.
• Indiana University
  • The CWC Library is a large collection of articles related to WAC, both
    general and discipline specific.
• Iowa State University (Communication Across the Curriculum)
  • Website has student and instructor resources that specifically
    incorporate visual, electronic, and oral presentation elements.
• Longview Community College
  • Of general interest is the WAC Bibliography, the Best Practices
    section, and the Student FAQ.
• Marquette University
  • Website includes Departmental Reference Guides on writing (including guides for Mathematics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Legal Writing), a Quick Tips guide for student writers by student writers, and a substantial list of links on writing in the workplace.
• Marshall University
  • Website collects resources for faculty interested in Multimodal
    Composition, and a Best Practices section by faculty on using writing in their classrooms.
• Middlesex Community College
  • Website offers a wide variety of sample student writing, through their
    Journal of Student Writing, and the Writing Samples
• Montgomery College
  • Check out MC’s collection of student writing samples
    from across the disciplines
• Northern Illinois University
  • While a little dated, faculty workshops and newsletters (1999-
    2005) still provide useful information for faculty, while The Archive houses even more (especially those in Economics, Finance, or Engineering and Technology)
• Philadelphia University
  • The WAC Program supports an Information Literacy initiative (critical
    thinking in all forms, not just writing) that stretches across disciplines, while the journal of undergraduate writing, OPEN, combines the efforts of undergraduate writers, digital designers, and graphic artists.
• Princeton University
  • Website collects broad Resources for Teaching with Writing
    (especially this guide), in addition to a Writing Lexicon that will be useful for teachers and students alike to gain a common vocabulary.
• Purdue University
  • Whether you are a student, a faculty member, a tutor, or researcher, you are likely to find something useful here. Also of interest is an extensive Job Search writing section, and a series of podcasts on topics in writing.
• State University of New York at Cortland
  • While primarily geared toward SUNY students and faculty, the
    Question and Answers section of the website has a wealth of advice useful to any teachers of writing.
• Texas A&M University
  • Website has useful resources for the teaching of both Written and Oral communication, including: tips for teaching with technology, tips on instruction (with a focus on encouraging public speaking), an extensive list of resources, a podcast, and a newsletter.
• University of California -- Davis
  • Website houses a video archive of writers speaking on writing, useful resources like Grading Standards and Syllabus Guidelines for writing courses, and information on innovative programs like the Designated Emphasis for PhD students and the Writing Ambassadors program for area high schools.
• University of California -- Irvine
  • Website provides sample syllabi, ESL research, newsletters, and the
    audio from their Science Writing panel discussions.
• University of Hawaii at Manoa
  • Website collects issues of the Writing Matters newsletter, a long Teacher Resources section (worth scrolling all the way through),
    and a Quick Tips and FAQ section designed for faculty new to WI courses.
• University of Illinois at Urbana -- Champaign
  • Collected Writing to Learn assignments include a clear section on why the assignment is important to student learning, while the WAC Resources page has a fascinating mathematical breakdown and report addressing the challenges/concerns of teaching writing.
• University Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Writing at University of Minnesota
  • Website has a number of useful resources for teachers
    (grouped by discipline), for students, and composition researchers.
• University of Missouri
  • Website collects the e-WAC newsletter, discipline specific
    assignments and syllabi, and guides on common academic writing genres that often cross disciplines.
• University of Pennsylvania
  • The Journal of Critical Writing (2007-Present) provides an excellent
    source of freshman writing samples across disciplines.
• University of Richmond
  • Geared around undergraduate Writing Consultants, the WAC program also offers a number of resources: tips for teachers, tips for tutors, the Writing Around Richmond newsletter (from 1998), and The Writer's Web online writing handbook.
• University of Wisconsin -- Madison
  • Website has a host of resources, articles, and tips for faculty looking to incorporate writing into their course, categorized by discipline.

    Additionally, the website has a useful handbook for their Writing Fellows Program.

• Washington State University
  • Program has a strong writing assessment focus, with applicable resources.
