Department of Art and Visual Technology
Scoring Criteria
- Content. Student writing should clearly engage with, and actively respond to, the subject matter described in the assignment. Papers should show evidence of research and should integrate research, reading, viewing and knowledge of art making (where appropriate) into writing. Students should try to integrate their research with their own interests.
- Form: Students should show an understanding of genre, audience and context in their writing, and respond appropriately to them. Papers should use relevant vocabulary, appropriate both to the discipline and to the audience. Papers should move clearly between the descriptive to the analytical, and support arguments logically using evidence. Being able to cite from research sources and to bring into discussion the ideas and/or practices of artists and writers is important. The inclusion of images in relation to research is also encouraged. Personal style and engagement with ideas is valued in AVT, rather than following a rigid formula. Being able to be reflexive, without merely citing personal beliefs or experience, is also valued.
- Structure: Students should be able to set up a context for a paper in the introduction, and bring a paper to a conclusion. Papers should demonstrate clear organization and move from idea to idea and point to point logically, with fluent transitions between parts.
- Documentation and citation should be careful and consistent. Students should select and follow an appropriate and agreed citation practice, and use it throughout a piece of writing. Ideas and quotations should be carefully documented to avoid plagiarism. Papers should include adequate numbers of referenced sources, fully cited.
- Style and mechanics: Students should attend to word choice, syntax, grammar and spelling and use complete sentences. Papers should show evidence of editing and proofreading, punctuation and formatting. Papers should use the active voice where possible, and conform to the correct number of pages for the assignment.
